Are my Gift Cards Valid in Canada/US?
Last updated: November 18, 2025
If you work in the US, your gift cards are issued to the US, and if you work in Canada they are issued to Canada. Most gift cards are region-specific and only work with retailers in the country where they were issued.
Check the card's merchant and region
The gift card must match the Canadian version of the retailer's website. For example:
Amazon cards: amazon.ca (Canada) vs amazon.com (US)
Walmart cards: walmart.ca (Canada) vs walmart.com (US)
Review your gift card details
To find region information for your gift card:
Open the gift card from your email or in the app under Store > My Wallet
Look for any region or domain notes on the card
If it's not clearly marked as Canadian, try redeeming it on the matching Canadian retailer website
Understanding regional restrictions
The validity of US gift cards internationally varies significantly:
Retailer-specific gift cards are typically region-locked and only work in their country of origin
General-purpose prepaid cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) are more likely to be accepted globally, though this depends on the issuer and may involve additional fees
When in doubt
If you're unsure about your gift card's validity in Canada/US, assume it is region-locked and redeem it only in the country it was issued to.
